Shifting Ground III

Watercolor Collage
36.5" x 28.5" Framed

After decades of painting from nature, representing the seen place or inhabitants of the place (birds, plants and animals), I was drawn to pare my imagery to rocks and water. The solid amid the fluid, the seemingly permanent amid an agent of its erosion. Aging and the pandemic heighten my awareness of disruption and loss.
Drawn to seek new ways of expressing my experience and what my eyes perceive, I fell into a collage process. I start with a small drawing, then paint from my drawing to the point where it begins to work as a whole. Then I cut the painting into sections (27 pieces in the case of Shifting Ground III). I paint on each piece like it is a painting of its own independent of the others. After that, I rearrange all the pieces to create a new dynamic relationship, glue that down, then overpaint areas to tie it together. Working in this manner is challenging and also exciting as I can achieve outcomes not possible with a representational approach to interpreting the same source.

I have five finished compositions in this series with more in progress. The title Shifting Ground reflects not only my process but also the ever changing nature of the ground beneath us.
