Alan Higinbotham
My emphasis as a ceramic artist is wheelthrown porcelain clay—each piece is unique. I strive for beautiful forms whether it’s your favorite Bowl, Vase, Teapot, or Wall Platter.
I do my own glaze chemistry for oxygen-starved (‘reduction’) kiln firings. By high-firing to 2350 degrees F. I am able to balance heat, time, and oxygen for vibrant Copper Reds and time-honored Celadon Green glazes.
My hope is to add color and richness to daily life. I studied under a master potter in Japan in the 1980s and have been a professional potter for over 40 years in Oregon.
My pottery is wheelthrown high-fired porcelain clay.
I use throwing techniques to exaggerate form and size, yielding pottery that is both functional and visually dynamic. I carve or shape pieces after they come off the wheel. Specializing in glaze chemistry, I formulate glazes for their beauty and durability in everyday use.
A reduction (oxygen-starved) high-firing to 2350 degrees F. yields the vibrant copper red, and traditional celadon green glazes with the contrasting earth tones of madrone.
This pottery is lead-free, dishwasher, microwave and oven-safe. I hope people enjoy its addition of color and richness to their daily life.
Over the last 40+ years of my work I have also specialized in clay-making, kiln design, saggar and wood-fire. Key influences on my work include being a teacher, and an intensive apprenticeship in the ancient pottery village of Bizen, Japan in the 1980's.
